It must be noted that this french press is very small, gives you a little less than a full mug of coffee. The glass vessel is virtually impossible to remove for cleaning purposes, so I clean it together for fear of breaking the glass. That said, it is a very reliable french press and I've had it now for over a year.
coarse grind problem. The screen in the plunger can develop tiny warps around its edge, allowing the coffee grinds to slip through. This is an engineering issue, not a fine vs. Occasionally I have to filter my coffee a second time through a paper filter before drinking. The plastic casing, on the other hand, is an excellent innovation that protects the fragile glass beaker from damage.
In the long run you get what you pay for. Bodum is by far the best product and does the job much more effectively as a coffee press. It leaves behind the coffee grains and one gets the coffee pure and delicious.
The quality of the coffee made is great and the filter press is easy to clean. The Bodum Kenya 12 oz. French Press coffee maker is a nice little coffee maker that makes just enough for one mug of coffee - which is exactly what I wanted. The only problem I have with this particular model is that the glass beaker insert tends to stick in the plastic holder and is difficult to remove for cleaning - and it needs to be removed for each cleaning. If it were not for this minor problem, I would rate it 5 stars.
I am disappointed with this particular model, and would not recommend it. But, I'm not sure that this French Press is much better than just mixing your coffee and hot water in a mug and waiting for the coffee to settle to the bottom.
Simply mix an adequate amount of ground coffee with hot water (depending on preference), wait 4 minutes, plunge the grinds, and serve.HOWEVER, the glass beaker on this model is not a true cylinder, but is actually wider at the top than at the bottom. The mesh disk on the plunger (that exists to push down the ground coffee) fits the narrower bottom of the beaker.
French presses are simple products that brew great, strong coffee. This is a pretty basic device, so it is hard to imagine that the #1 French press company blew it.
At the top of the beaker, the mesh disk is a smaller diameter. Thus, as you begin to plunge the brewed coffee, floating coffee grinds simply squirt around the outside of the mesh disk, and remain in your coffee.
Either way, you will chew a lot of coffee.I own 3 larger Bodum French presses, and on each of those products, the mesh plunger fits the glass beaker at the top of the press, and therefore, they work great at plunging the coffee grinds. I suspect that the glass beaker is universal across all Bodum 12oz presses, so I would be hesitant to buy any.
